Bradley Teletheater Handicapping Challenge July 8 & 9, 2006
Handleman
Wins Bradley Teletheater Handicapping Challenge
Windsor Locks,
July 10, 2006 –After finishing second in Autotote’s Sports Haven
Handicapping Challenge in February, Bill Handleman returned to Connecticut
to capture the Bradley Teletheater Handicapping Challenge this past weekend,
July 8 – 9.
Handleman of Neptune, NJ, a
turf writer and general columnist for the Asbury Park Press, accumulated
$2,608.50 in contest winnings to earn $11,250 in prize money. Playing two
entries in the contest, Handleman finished third with his second entry with
$1,265.60 in contest winnings, earning the third place prize of $3,950.
Steve Wolfson, Jr., Holly
Hill, FL, finished in second place with $1,885.60 in contest earnings taking
home $5,650 in prize money.
The top two finishers qualify
for the Daily Racing Form/National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s
national championship which will be held in Las Vegas in 2007. Handleman
had already qualified for the national contest with his February performance
and, as a result, fourth place finisher Paul Yaffee, Skokie, IL, will join
Wolfson, Jr. in Las Vegas. Wolfson, who was representing Autotote, won the
NTRA tournament in 2002, taking home $100,000.
This year’s contest also
offered two spots in the Coast Casinos World Series of Handicapping
tournament at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, in 2007. Handleman, along with
fifth place finisher James Gustaferro, Gloucester, MA, will represent
Autotote at the Orleans.
The Bradley contest was a live
money contest. Participates had to wager $100 each contest day on races from
Belmont, Monmouth, Churchill Downs, Calder and Hollywood Park. Any winnings
the contestants earned could be wagered throughout the two day challenge
with no maximum wager. The only requirement was that they wager on ten races
for at least $10.
Handleman finished the first day
of the contest with $3.50 on his winning entry, but he was able to build up
his bankroll on Sunday afternoon. He wagered $60 on Gimme Credit ($14.60) to
win Belmont’s ninth race and $50 to win and show on Goblin Valley ($22.40)
in Hollywood’s fourth race. In the last race of the contest, he wagered
$600, virtually his entire bankroll, on High Z ($7.40) to win Hollywood’s
fifth race.
Handleman finished $772 in front of
Wolfson, who was leading going into the last race. He intended to bet $200
to show on the odds on favorite in the last race, but the horse was a gate
scratch.
The highest Connecticut
finisher was Mike Latella of Hamden, CT, finishing in sixth place. Wade
Chubbuck, Putnam, CT, was the leader after the first day of the contest with
$609 in winnings, earning him the first day prize of $535. He finished
seventh overall with $993 in winnings, taking home $1,735 in prize money.
